Today is a very special day.

Special Collections 2.0 is now available for purchase!

I'm very, very proud of the book that Beth Whittaker and I put together over the past year and a half. I hope that others find it useful as well.

Please feel free to email other mentions of the book to me at lmthomas@niu.edu, or better yet, post them in the comments. I'd like to keep track of them if at all possible.

Like this one, at the Law Librarian Blog.

Oh, and here's where to buy the book. [Libraries Unlimited] [Amazon] [WorldCat] [Keenzo]

1. Special Collections 2.0 is DONE. Finito. There is nothing left to do except wait for the publisher to ship us our copies.

2. We beat our deadline by a week.

3. David Tennant will be hosting Masterpiece Contemporary on PBS !!!

4. Just saw a proposed design for the cover of Chicks Dig Time Lords and it is OMG so made of WIN. (Let's hope we can make it work with pesky things like, oh, text).

5. I have an awesome husband and daughter. Did I mention that? Just in general. They are awesome and I love them.

Oh, and in bonus news, there's a handsome new member of the [info]eeknight and [info]chats_noirs Fan Club. With pictures!

Beginnings and endings...

Caitlin
Caitlin is off with [info]michaeldthomas at her new school this morning. She is no longer a toddler--she's a little kid.

I have the house to myself, which allowed me to slog through a 60-page OCLC/RLG report for my book. I'm glad I did it, but it's hard to settle down to write at this point. Cait has Easter Seals this afternoon, so I should have plenty of time to hunker down and write today after all.

Time to beat the digital preservation chapter into some kind of shape.

2.0 death march

Start of day: 8513 words.
End: 8047.

crap.

Today was more reading than writing, and a little editing.

On the bright side, the encyclopedia article was officially sent off today. Unless I get more feedback, that's done.

Does it count if I put together a catering menu for a Friends event instead?

After lunch starting point: 7831 words.
Quittin' time: 8513 words.

Total for the day: almost 2500 words. I went from page 17 to page 24.

6 pages. Not bad. Progress slowed this afternoon because of having to read and write simultaneously.

Clearly, it is time for dinner and a pirate movie. Pirates of the Caribbean 3, to be precise, courtesy of our public library.

At the lunchtime break: 7831 words.

Apparently, I write faster with kitten assistance.

Onward!

Ow. My brain.

I'm halfway down page 17 of Yet Another Chapter that Will Not Die. Found a great resource that may just render me obsolete. :) Cornell did digital preservation tutorials. They have since 2003.

Ow. My brain hurts. How do you people keep up this pace, anyhow?

Word Count: 6,102. I'm not sure where I started, but I was on page 13 or so, and did 4 pages today. Go, me.

So, back to the daily grind, as it were. I'm trying desperately to research and write the chapter on Digital Preservation for the Special Collections 2.0 book. I had a free day today to write...closed my office door...caffeinated...and cranked out three pages.

*le sigh* I'm trying to remind myself that beginnings are the hardest. Oddly enough, as I am struggling to write, I want my leisure reading to get easier, so I just finished an Amanda Quick romance novel, and am about to give Jo Beverley a try.

Caitlin's last day of summer school is tomorrow, which is bittersweet. She's a big girl, headed for kindergarten! Plus, it means that Michael is going to lose a big chunk of writing time, and we need to figure out how to work some back in for both of us. It may mean turning off the telly (gasp!) and ignoring the interwebs (double gasp!) so that we can work side-by-side on our laptops. How very, um, 21st century of us...

And for the record, I HATE humidity. But the first series of House of Cards was brilliant.

ETA: Doctor Horrible, Joss's new project is made of WIN. Go. Watch.

...I will not attempt to be comprehensive...representative GOOD samples are enough...I do not need to read EVERYTHING on digital preservation or socialnetworking, and attempting to do so will make me crazy.

That is all.

Work, play, and mermaids

...did some good work this morning on the book, with a much better edit of the blog chapter. I'm now beginning the chapter on digital preservation, so much reading will ensue over the next couple of days.

Caitlin enjoyed The Little Mermaid yet again this afternoon as a mode of entertainment, while I attempted to begin all that reading.

I was found by one friend from high school on Facebook today, and, to my joy, found some of my closest theatre friends as a result. This makes me indescribably happy, even nearly twenty years later. Holy crap, I'm getting old.

Two more chapters to write, then introduction and conclusion to co-write, before August 1.

Did I mention that I'm beginning to panic?! Yup. I am. The month of July will be, uhm, a bit hectic. Do not expect much blogging.

We bought [info]michaeldthomas some new shoes.

Isn't life exciting?

Whew!

I finally finished The Chapter That Would Not Die.

Well, Caitlin has the wonder-goop going on. She sounds a lot like Darth Vader at the moment. Poor kid. She's so stuffed up that her sinuses are weeping.

I stayed home today to work on the first chapter of my book. I'm pretty happy with what I accomplished; I'm hoping to have a reasonably full draft for my coauthor by the end of next week. But my brain is now decidedly mushy.

Whee!

Oh yeah, and [info]jimhines, [info]mdhenry, and [info]blackaire all have book birthdays last or this week. Goblins, a flaming spider, zombies, and werewolf cops-on-the-edge. Made of awesome. GO BUY!!!

A brief self-satisfied moment...

...because I took today as a research day for my book, and actually got stuff done. I have 11 pages of my chapter on wikis, which is nearly double what I had. I'm hoping to about double that in the next couple of weeks to finish it off. Yay, me! I almost feel like a real-life researcher!

Oh, yeah, and one of "my" authors, Jack McDevitt, made the Nebula short-list , thanks in no small part, I'm sure, to the "NIU bump" of having donated his papers. Several of "my" non-public authors (those who have agreed to archive with me, but have not yet done so) also made the list, and I am duly proud of them.

I should, however, point out that McDevitt won his first Nebula, after multiple nominations, *just after* physically donating his papers to NIU.

Just sayin'...
